How to Care for Embellished Jalabiyas and Kaftans

Stone-worked and embroidered pieces last for years if you wash them gently, iron them inside out and store them flat or on padded hangers. Plain cotton jalabiyas can go in the machine. Anything with stones should not.

Washing

PieceHow to wash
Plain cotton or linen jalabiyaMachine wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out
Hareer, crepe or chiffon without stonesHand wash cold with mild detergent, or a gentle cycle in a mesh bag
Light stone work or embroideryHand wash cold, inside out. Don't scrub the stone area.
Heavy stone work, velvet, satin, thobe (soube)Dry clean only

Drying and ironing

  1. Never wring. Press the water out with a towel.
  2. Dry flat, or on a hanger in the shade. UAE sun fades colour fast.
  3. Iron inside out on low heat, with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.
  4. Never iron directly on stones. Heat loosens heat-set crystals.

Storage

  • Fold heavy stone pieces flat with tissue between the layers. Hanging stretches the shoulders.
  • Use breathable cotton garment bags, not plastic.
  • Keep perfume and oud away from stones and silk. Spray before you dress, not on the fabric.
